Looking to Study Abroad in Australia? Check out these Tips First

Gees ConsultantsFebruary 5, 2020

Our previous blog threw some light on why one should consider Australia as a top study abroad destination, and the reasons were pretty much compelling. But is there any preparation that one needs to do before making the decision to study abroad? Here are a few quick tips.

Do your research:
Do your bit of research as to the historical facts and culture of the country. There are in-depth resources including videos, articles, blogs, and magazines online that you can flip through for a deeper understanding and grasp of things in perspective.

Pack less:
Do you pack more than you can really deal with? Segregate the essentials from the non-essentials to reduce your burden and take the stress out of your trip.

Weather the ‘weather’:
Beat the weather is what anybody would look to do first up. But that isn’t easy if you don’t have a fair idea of how the weather would turn out. Thanks to the numerous apps and tools online at your disposal.

Start saving:
Because the cost of living in Australia can be on the higher side, savings is crucial to avoid financial crunch and maintain a decent lifestyle. The key is proper budgeting ahead of time and managing your expectations wisely.

Gear up for a different academic structure:
Australia has a different academic structure compared to the likes of the US with students having to retrain their brains when it comes to achieving their grades. In Australia grades usually begin at 0 and students earn grades from 0% to 50% with examinations and/or assignments. This said the study load is comparatively less to that of the US.

Time Management:
With a bit of time management, you can manage the study-leisure equation as Australia, as a tourist destination, has a lot of exotic locations to explore to escape once in a while.

Talk to Alum:
If you know people who have already passed out of universities or colleges down under, feel free to talk to them and get the specifics required before you make up your mind to study in Australia.

Meet the Locals:
Aussies are usually affable and gregarious depending on what your interests are. You can get quickly acquainted with them if you join any local clubs or professional organizations with regular networking and meetups.

Having an open mind:
Keeping an open and diverse mind to the local culture, traditional practices, education system, and expectations will put you in good stead over how things shape up once you plan to study undergraduate or postgraduate courses in Australia.

Studying Abroad? What to Expect

Gees ConsultantsFebruary 3, 2020

Studying abroad can be a daunting experience for many, but it throws in a lot of opportunities hitherto unidentified such as learning a new language, practicing a new culture or simply adopting a global mindset. Even when you wake up with butterflies in your stomach of adapting yourself to a new land, the opportunity that it presents would be comforting, if not more. Therefore, what can you expect here as a student studying abroad, or in other words what are the underlying opportunities?

Diversified thinking:
Most professors and lecturers in the academic circles of foreign universities are not just tutors, but also make good mentors and help diversify their pupils’ thought process. This is important to develop a global perspective of things and crucial, as a skill, for you to work in a corporate firm or MNC later.

One with the host country:
This can be the biggest challenge, but certainly, you can do one bit at a time by constant learning of one’s culture and practicing them given the opportunity. Doing proper research about the host country would put you in good command over its culture in the long run without sounding too unnatural.

Practice the language:
Not that easy like it sounds. It requires continuous effort to win over the trust of the people of the host country by mastering any language in spoken and written form. There are several apps and tools available these days compared to just the pocket dictionary book of the yesteryears. Try reading signboards and billboards and conversing with basic word usages to gain the much needed confidence early on.

Respect and learn the culture:
It won’t suffice if you learn the language alone. Respecting and learning the local culture of the host country early on is critical not just to study abroad but also if you get a job opportunity there later on. Have a local friend or batch mate correcting you whenever you fail to stick to a particular cultural point. By this, you can master the nitty gritty things of one’s cultural norms.

Document your travel:
Documenting your travel helps you relive your memory of the good times spent abroad. Keeping a journal of places you visited, local flavours tasted, seasons experienced, problems faced and words and phrases you learned would come in handy anytime you wanted to play the moments back in your mind.

But let’s not forget that it presents its own challenges such as securing a permanent residence, job security and so on. If you’re looking to study abroad, here are the top 5 destinations to check out: US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany.

# United Kingdom: Universities in the UK have received about 30,000 Indian applications for admission until September 2019. This is an increase of 63% over the previous year. The biggest advantage of studying in the UK is that the PG courses are typically one year and this apparently lowers the cost of education.

#United States: The number of Indian students who applied for admission in colleges and universities in the US last year was 2,02,014. In the US, students can enjoy the benefits of merit-based tuition waivers, in addition to getting scholarships and teaching assistantships.

#Canada: Canada received 1,03, 955 applications from India starting from January to October 2019. When it comes to the advantages of studying in Canada, the fee is relatively low in top universities, there is a work permit of up to 3 years post-course completion and getting a permanent residency is comparatively easy.

#Australia: The number of Indian students applying for university admission last year was 1,07,673—a 32 percent increase over 2017-2018. If you’re fresh out of college, you can stay and work in Australia for up to 3 years. The work visa is tad easy to obtain and so is the permanent residency. And if students are ready to move to smaller cities, they are likely to get one more year of work visa.

#Germany: Universities and colleges in Germany received 20,180 Indian applications for admission for the winter semester of 2018-19. There are world-class universities in Germany for STEM, in addition to many PG courses in English. Students would get 18 months post-study work permit too.
